Moses's Story
Moses, a figure of immense biblical stature, faced the profound challenge of finding his purpose not once, but twice. His early life was marked by an identity crisis, raised in Pharaoh's court yet born of Hebrew lineage. This internal conflict culminated in a rash act of violence, forcing him into exile in Midian for forty years. It was in this wilderness, tending sheep, that God confronted him at the burning bush, calling him to an unimaginable task: to lead His people out of slavery. Moses's initial response was one of profound inadequacy and doubt, questioning his own abilities and God's choice. Yet, through this divine encounter, his true purpose was revealed, not as a prince or a shepherd, but as God's chosen deliverer.
His second encounter with purpose came after the Exodus, when the weight of leading millions through the wilderness, mediating God's law, and dealing with a rebellious people became overwhelming. He often felt the burden of leadership, at times expressing despair and even asking God to take his life. However, God continually reaffirmed His presence and purpose for Moses, providing strength, wisdom, and clarification of his role. Moses's life teaches us that purpose isn't always clear from the outset, nor is it free from struggle. It is often revealed in unexpected places, confirmed through divine encounter, and sustained by God's faithfulness, even when we feel utterly unqualified or overwhelmed. For pastors, understanding Moses's journey offers a powerful lens through which to guide congregants grappling with their own sense of calling and significance within God's grand narrative.
Devotional
A congregation-ready devotional through the lens of Moses
My dear friends, I remember a time when purpose was a distant, forgotten dream. For forty years, I tended sheep in the desolate wilderness of Midian, a fugitive from Pharaoh, a man who had once been a prince but now felt utterly lost. I had tried to find purpose in my own strength, striking down an Egyptian, only to flee in shame. I thought my life's story was written: failure, exile, insignificance.
But then, the desert fire consumed a bush, yet did not burn it. And from that flame, the voice of the Almighty spoke my name. 'Moses, Moses!' He called me, a man who felt like a nobody, to stand before the most powerful man on earth and demand freedom for His people. My first instinct was to argue, to list my inadequacies: 'Who am I?' 'What if they don't believe me?' 'I am slow of speech!' Oh, how I clung to my excuses, convinced I was the wrong man for the job.
Yet, God did not relent. He did not dismiss my fears, but He met them with His promise: 'I will be with you.' He didn't ask for my perfection, but for my availability. He didn't need my eloquence, but my obedience. And in that moment, standing barefoot on holy ground, my true purpose began to unfold. It wasn't a purpose I had chosen for myself, but one divinely appointed. It was a purpose that stretched me, challenged me, and at times, overwhelmed me. But it was also a purpose that brought me closer to God than I could have ever imagined, allowing me to witness His mighty hand and lead His beloved children.
So, if you find yourself questioning your worth, if you feel lost in the wilderness of uncertainty, listen for His voice. Do not let your past failures or present fears define your future. God's call often comes to the unqualified, the overlooked, the ones who doubt themselves the most. He doesn't need your strength; He needs your 'yes.' For it is in surrendering to His will, trusting in His presence, that you will truly discover the magnificent purpose He has woven into the very fabric of your being. He has a plan for you, a divine appointment waiting to be embraced. Just say 'yes,' and watch Him work.

An opening illustration to launch your message on finding purpose
Good morning, church family. Have you ever felt like you're just drifting through life, waiting for something significant to happen? Or perhaps you've had moments where you thought you knew your purpose, only for it to be shattered by circumstance or self-doubt? It's a universal human experience, this quest for meaning, this longing to know why we are here. And today, I want us to peer into the life of one of the Bible's most iconic figures, Moses, to find some profound answers for our own journey of purpose.
Imagine Moses, a man who started life as a prince in the most powerful empire of his day, only to become a fugitive, a shepherd in the desolate wilderness of Midian for four decades. Forty years! That's a long time to feel like your life has taken a detour, perhaps even a dead end. He had tried to be a deliverer in his own strength, and it ended in exile. He was, by all accounts, a man who had lost his way, a man whose grand purpose seemed to have evaporated into the desert air. He was tending sheep, a humble, repetitive task, far from the halls of power or the fields of glory. He was, in a very real sense, 'finding purpose' by simply surviving, by fulfilling the immediate needs of his flock. But God had a different plan, a grander purpose waiting to be unveiled. And it was in that seemingly ordinary, even mundane, wilderness setting that God chose to interrupt Moses's quiet existence with a burning bush and an undeniable call. What can Moses's journey teach us about how God reveals purpose, often in the most unexpected places and through the most unlikely people?
