Moses's Story
Brothers and sisters, when we look at the life of Moses, we see a man who, in many ways, embodies the struggles we often face in ministry – particularly pastoral burnout and compassion fatigue. Imagine the weight of leading millions of grumbling, stiff-necked people through a wilderness for forty years! From the moment God called him at the burning bush, Moses was thrust into an overwhelming role. He bore the burden of their complaints, their idolatry, their constant need for guidance and provision. He was the intercessor, the judge, the shepherd, the prophet – all wrapped into one. This wasn't just a job; it was a relentless, all-consuming calling that demanded every fiber of his being, often with little gratitude in return.
We see the effects of this immense pressure clearly in Scripture. In Exodus 18, his father-in-law Jethro observes Moses sitting alone, judging the people "from morning till evening," and wisely warns him, "What you are doing is not good. You and these people who are with you will certainly wear yourselves out, for the task is too heavy for you; you cannot do it alone" (Exodus 18:17-18). This is a textbook description of burnout – exhaustion from overwhelming demands. Later, in Numbers 11, Moses cries out to God in despair, "I cannot carry all these people by myself; the burden is too heavy for me" (Numbers 11:14). He even asks God to kill him, a poignant expression of compassion fatigue, where the emotional and physical resources to care for others are completely depleted.
What does Scripture say in response to Moses's plight, and by extension, to ours? First, it affirms that the burden *is* heavy, and we are not meant to carry it alone. Jethro's counsel led to the delegation of responsibilities, a vital lesson in healthy ministry. More profoundly, God's response to Moses in Numbers 11 was not condemnation, but provision: He poured out His Spirit on seventy elders to share the load. This reminds us that God is aware of our limits and provides both practical wisdom (like delegation) and supernatural empowerment (His Spirit, and the body of Christ) to sustain us. When we feel overwhelmed, like Moses, we are invited to lay our burdens before our compassionate God, trusting that He will either lighten the load, strengthen us to bear it, or provide others to share the yoke.
Devotional
A congregation-ready devotional through the lens of Moses
My beloved children, hear me, your old shepherd, Moses. I have walked many years in this wilderness, seen the dust of the desert and the glory of the Lord. I know what it is to carry a heavy burden, to feel the weariness seep into your bones, and the spirit grow faint. You, my dear ones, who pour out your hearts for others, who pray without ceasing, who tend the flock with such love – you too know this deep ache.
There were days, many days, when the complaints of the people, the endless needs, the sheer weight of responsibility, threatened to crush me. My hands grew tired, my voice hoarse, my spirit beleaguered. I felt the compassion draining from me, replaced by a weary sigh. It is a dangerous place, this fatigue of the soul, for it can dim the very light of God within us.
But remember what the Lord taught me, and what He teaches you still. He saw my struggle. He commanded Jethro, my father-in-law, to speak wisdom (Exodus 18). "The thing is too heavy for you," he said. "You are not able to perform it alone." And so, we established others to share the load, to judge the small matters, while I brought the great matters to God.
Do not be ashamed to admit your weariness. It is not a sign of weakness, but of your humanity, and often, of your great love. The Lord Himself, our good Shepherd, knows our frame; He remembers that we are dust (Psalm 103:14). He does not ask you to carry the entire world on your shoulders, but to cast your burdens upon Him, for He cares for you (1 Peter 5:7).
Seek rest, my dears. Delegate. Share your burdens with trusted brethren. Draw near to the wellspring of His presence, for there alone will your strength be renewed, your compassion rekindled, and your spirit find its true Sabbath. He is your strength, not your own failing flesh. Trust Him to sustain you, as He sustained me through forty long years. Amen.

An opening illustration to launch your message on pastoral burnout and compassion fatigue
Imagine standing before a vast, grumbling multitude, their complaints echoing in your ears, their needs pressing in on every side. You’ve led them out of slavery, witnessed divine wonders, and yet, they still question your every move. This was Moses’s daily reality. Day after day, from dawn till dusk, he sat, judging disputes, offering guidance, and carrying the burden of an entire nation on his shoulders. The weight of their spiritual and physical needs was immense, a constant drain on his spirit. He wasn't just a leader; he was their mediator, their counselor, their primary point of contact with God. Can you feel the exhaustion, the mental and emotional fatigue that must have settled deep within him? This wasn't just 'a bad day at the office'; this was a prolonged, soul-crushing experience of pastoral burnout and compassion fatigue. His story isn't just ancient history; it's a mirror reflecting the silent struggles many in ministry face today, feeling overwhelmed by the endless demands and the emotional toll of caring for God's people. How did Moses find a way to sustain his calling without completely breaking down? What can his journey teach us about protecting our own hearts and minds in demanding service?
