Paul's Story

The Apostle Paul, originally Saul of Tarsus, experienced a dramatic conversion on the road to Damascus that utterly transformed his life's trajectory. From a zealous persecutor of Christians, he became the most prolific missionary of the early church, traveling extensively to proclaim the Gospel to both Jews and Gentiles. His personal encounter with the risen Christ fueled an unquenchable passion for evangelism, leading him to endure immense suffering, imprisonment, and persecution for the sake of the Good News. Paul's life is a testament to the power of a changed heart and the urgency of the Great Commission.

Paul faced the ultimate challenge of sharing his faith in hostile environments, often among people who had never heard of Jesus. He navigated cultural barriers, religious opposition, and personal dangers, yet he never wavered in his commitment to evangelism. His letters are replete with exhortations and examples of how to effectively communicate the Gospel, emphasizing both the content of the message (Christ crucified and resurrected) and the manner of its delivery (with love, humility, and boldness, empowered by the Holy Spirit). For Paul, evangelism wasn't just an activity; it was the very purpose of his existence, rooted in his profound gratitude for God's grace.

Scripture portrays Paul as a strategic evangelist, adapting his approach to different audiences (e.g., Acts 17 in Athens) while remaining steadfast to the core message. He understood the importance of both public proclamation and personal discipleship, planting churches and nurturing new believers. His example continues to challenge pastors and believers today to embrace the call to evangelism with the same fervor and wisdom, trusting that God will use our imperfect efforts for His perfect purposes.

Devotional

A congregation-ready devotional through the lens of Paul

My beloved brothers and sisters in Christ,

Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. It is I, Paul, who writes to you, a prisoner for the sake of the Gospel, yet free in the Spirit. I recall my days before Christ, a zealous Pharisee, convinced I was serving God by persecuting His church. Oh, how blind I was! But then, on the road to Damascus, the Risen Lord Jesus met me, and my world was turned upside down. From that moment, my life's purpose became clear: to make Him known.

I know that sharing your faith, this glorious Gospel, can feel daunting. The world is often hostile, hearts are hardened, and fear can creep in. But remember my words in Romans 1:16: 'For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes.' Do you truly believe this? Do you grasp the immense power contained within this message of Christ's death and resurrection? It is not merely a story; it is the very lifeblood of God, capable of transforming the darkest soul.

Therefore, do not shrink back! Do not be silent! Your testimony, your life lived for Christ, and your words spoken in love are instruments in God's mighty hand. I urge you, as I urged Timothy, 'Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching' (2 Timothy 4:2). Let the love of Christ compel you. Let the urgency of lost souls stir your spirit. Pray for boldness, pray for open doors, and then step out in faith. The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Be one of those laborers, my dear friends. Your reward in heaven will be great, and the joy of seeing lives transformed will be a foretaste of glory. May the Lord strengthen you for this noble task.

An opening illustration to launch your message on sharing your faith and evangelism

Good morning, church. Have you ever felt that knot in your stomach, that hesitation in your voice, when the opportunity arises to share your faith? Perhaps it’s with a colleague at work, a neighbor over the fence, or even a family member. We know we should, we feel the prompting, but sometimes, the words just won't come, or fear holds us captive. It’s a challenge as old as the church itself, and one that even the greatest evangelist in history, the Apostle Paul, understood deeply.

Imagine Paul, standing on Mars Hill in Athens, surrounded by philosophers and skeptics, their idols and altars mocking the very concept of a risen Savior. Or picture him, shipwrecked, beaten, imprisoned, yet still, his primary concern was to proclaim Christ. He wasn't always eloquent in the way the Greeks admired, and he certainly wasn't immune to fear or doubt. Yet, he declared in 1 Corinthians 2:2, 'For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.' What was it about Paul that enabled him to consistently overcome these obstacles and boldly share the Gospel, even when it meant suffering and death? How did he move from a persecutor to the most passionate evangelist the world has ever known? This morning, as we turn to the Scriptures, we’re going to explore Paul’s unwavering commitment to evangelism, and discover how his life and letters can empower us to overcome our own fears and step into the glorious calling of sharing our faith with a world desperately in need of hope.
