Moses's Story
Dear fellow laborers in the vineyard,
When we think of Moses, we often picture the mighty hand of God parting the Red Sea, the tablets of the Law, or the burning bush. But beneath the miraculous, there was a man, just like us, burdened by immense responsibility. Moses was the ultimate caregiver for an entire nation—a million or more people—fresh out of slavery, often complaining, and constantly needing guidance. He was their leader, judge, prophet, and intercessor, carrying their burdens, mediating their disputes, and standing in the gap for them before a holy God. Imagine the sheer weight of that daily grind, the emotional and spiritual toll it must have taken.
It’s in this context that we see a profound example of what we might call "caregiver burnout and self-neglect." Exodus 18 paints a vivid picture: Moses was sitting alone, judging the people from morning until evening. He was trying to do it all himself, pouring out every ounce of his energy without proper rest or delegation. His father-in-law, Jethro, observed this unsustainable pattern and wisely confronted him, saying, "What you are doing is not good. You and these people who are with you will certainly wear yourselves out, for the task is too heavy for you; you cannot do it alone" (Exodus 18:17-18). Jethro wasn't just offering management advice; he was speaking to the very real danger of Moses depleting himself to the point of collapse, and in doing so, failing both himself and the people he served.
Scripture, in this beautiful narrative, offers a powerful lesson for us today. It reminds us that even the most called and gifted among us are human, with finite resources. Jethro's counsel led Moses to delegate, to empower others, and to establish a sustainable system of leadership. This wasn't a sign of weakness, but of wisdom and strength, allowing Moses to focus on his unique calling while ensuring the well-being of the community. It’s a divine invitation for us to recognize our limits, to seek support, and to steward our own health—physical, emotional, and spiritual—so we can continue to faithfully serve God's people without burning out. Let us learn from Moses's journey, embracing rest and delegation not as luxuries, but as essential components of faithful ministry.
Devotional
A congregation-ready devotional through the lens of Moses
My dear ones, children of the Most High, listen closely to the words of an old man who has walked many weary miles in your shoes. I see the burdens you carry, the endless tasks, the needs of those you love who depend on you. Your hearts are good, your spirits willing, but I also see the weariness etched upon your faces, the quiet sigh that escapes when no one is listening.
Do you remember when I bore the weight of this entire nation upon my shoulders? From dawn till dusk, I judged, I counseled, I prayed. My father-in-law, Jethro, a wise man, saw my struggle. He said to me, "What you are doing is not good. You and these people with you will certainly wear yourselves out, for the thing is too heavy for you; you are not able to perform it alone" (Exodus 18:17-18).
He spoke truth, and the Lord confirmed it. I was neglecting myself, and in doing so, I was diminishing my capacity to serve God and His people effectively. My strength was finite, but God's wisdom was boundless. He taught me to delegate, to empower others, to trust in His provision through many hands.
My beloved caregivers, you are not called to be martyrs, but faithful stewards. Your body, your mind, your spirit – these are temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19). To neglect them is to neglect a precious gift from God. The Lord who sustained me in the wilderness desires to sustain you now. He invites you to cast your burdens upon Him (Psalm 55:22), to find rest for your souls (Matthew 11:28).
Do not think that caring for yourself is selfish; it is sacred. It is recognizing your limits as a creature and trusting in the limitless power of your Creator. Find your quiet moments, seek wise counsel, and allow others to share the load. For when you are renewed, you can pour out from a full cup, not an empty one. May the God of all comfort grant you His peace and strength. Amen.

An opening illustration to launch your message on caregiver burnout and self-neglect
Imagine standing on the precipice of a vast, untamed wilderness, responsible for the well-being of millions of people. Their complaints are a constant hum, their needs endless, their faith wavering. This was Moses, a man called by God to lead a nation, but also a man susceptible to the crushing weight of his responsibilities. We often picture Moses as the mighty deliverer, parting seas and receiving laws from God. But beneath the awe-inspiring miracles was a human being, bearing an unimaginable burden. He was the ultimate caregiver, tending to the spiritual, physical, and emotional needs of an entire community. There were days, surely, when the sheer scale of the task, the constant demands, and the ingratitude of the people must have pushed him to the brink. Today, we'll look at Moses's journey not just as a leader, but as a caregiver, and uncover profound insights into preventing burnout and the dangers of self-neglect, even when serving God's highest calling.
